Holgard Campaign Session 3 - Barbanikos' Task

SESSION 3 15/05/21

Characters: Maethedir, Merlon, Sixtus Sunwalker

Downtime Days 31-49
Maethedir, Milton, and Sixtus Sunwalker rode to the closest city of Underland in search of more adventure. Maethedir started teaching Milton Elvish, and Sixtus wants hench men.

Introduced three new characters:

Alder Birch - a chad wood elf Fighter 1/Magic-User 1 male (to avoid strength restriction) with wood elf tattoos. 17 strength! Exiled from village for being too chad.

Atreus Brandybuck - a dingy and derelict Holbyan hobbit Thief 1 that has latched onto Sixtus, Maethedir, and Milton after they saved his village. Pretty bad at what he does, and with a charisma of 6 nobody really likes him either.

Merlon - smug high elf Fighter 1/Magic User 1 who is seeking real world experience after finishing his degree. Has a glorious brown mane and is the sole non-monstrous practitioner of Merlonomics, though rumours from unsavoury sources claim it has been well received in Goblin Town.

Milton got into a bar scuffle over the merits of regional brews, and lost some teeth in the process, so he was sitting out this adventure.

Day 50
The party heard a bunch of rumours in the world that I'm pretty sure everyone forgot after I said them, except Maethedir who said the local magic-user had work in The Weald, a massive wild forest he and the OGs had experience with. After deciding the cities internal religious conflict was beneath their enlightened self interest, the party found themselves in the bizarre manse of Barbanikos one moment, and the next trekking through the Weald for some ancient ruins the mage had little info to share about. Oh and around this time, Atreus and Alder left to do 'business' possibly related to the Holbyan Carcinoleaf, which is in high demand within the city.

The first night saw the party setting up camp without a fire after hearing something die and orcish shouting. Then, during Merlons watch, the horses were startled and the orcs found them! Maethedir shot a couple of them from a tree, using his predator heat vision, while Merlon and Sixtus lit a torch and took defensive positions around the horses. The orcs surrounded the party, and the boss entered, charging Merlo, who, while blocking the attack, lost his spell he had big ideas for! Shortly after, Sixtus smacked the orcs head with his mace while Maethedir finished it off with an arrow. The remaining orcs fled, whimpering disgustingly.

Day 51
In the morning, the party re-oriented themselves with Maethedir climbing a tree and he noticed Barbanikos' tower reaching up much higher than it appeared to in Underland. Their day was quiet, until evening, when Merlon and Sixtus' horses detected wolves, which the OGs recognised as Worg speech (a previous encounter) and panicked, fleeing randomly! Maethedir and Sixtus were quick to calm his steed, but Merlon's kept going deeper, almost stumbling into a dark, dense, massively cobwebbed portion of the woods. The party regrouped and calmed the beasts, before taking up a defensive position and tethering the steeds. They set up for flank attacks, with Sixtus and Maethedir on the left, and Merlon setting up his torch on the right. The left flank arrived first, with Maethedir sleeping one of them while Sixtus guarded him, copping a dangerous bite from the second! The right flank came when Merlon cast his underwhelmingly named Affect Normal Fires to amplify his torch to 3' diameter, setting the 3 worgs on fire causing them to flee. With this, and Maethedir executing the sleeping one, the fight was over... Until they remembered the main pack. They changed formation with the wounded Sixtus in the rear, when 5 worgs entered, took a look around, and fled!

Due to real life commitments encroaching, the party elected to return to Underland in the morning, their journey being briefly interrupted by some giant toads romping in a pond, to which they went "um... No" and backtracked, before camping for the night and arriving back in town at noon on Day 55 with naught to show for it but the harrowing experience, and, I surmise, a few choice words for Barbanikos and his lacking advice.

XP total - 696XP each

No treasure!

Class Role & Alignment Performance Ratings
Merlon - (E)xcellent. Good tactical decisions befitting a fighter, and not shying from battle. Clever use of magics.

Maethedir - (E)xcellent - Similar to Merlon, good tactical ideas with tree climbing, readying weapons in ground for after spellcasting, ready deployment of spells.

Sixtus - (E)xcellent - Very consistent and noble attitude, places self between allies and danger without hesitation. Always thinking of the children, especially that poor sick, potentially ratspawn Atreus.
